The name Hamstead
is extant from the thirteenth century and simply means "homestead".
In 1870 Hamstead was just a little backwater in the Staffordshire
Countryside just on the out skirts of Birmingham and probably
would have remained so, but for the discovery of Coal
Work on the mine began in 1875 although it wasn't until March
1880 that the announcement that a seam of coal had been struck
at a depth of 573yards and 2 feet below the surface(making it
deepest 'thick seam mine in the world). Mining of the new found
coal began in ernest, and due to the influx of people row and
row of small 2 up 2 down terraced houses sprung up. The coming
of the colliery did not please everyone however. Hamstead was
a little way from birmingham with nothing but green belt between,
which as dotted the houses of local businessmen and many where
not happy having the mine or their doorstep. |
